In every community there are leaders. Through their actions, they set the tone for ethical behavior, right and wrong.
In order for a broad environmental ethic to develop in Israel and in Beer Sheva specifically, there must be visible leaders that show the way. Shvuat ha-Adamah/Earth’s Promise is working to cultivate that leadership by providing individuals with the skills they need to live environmentally conscious lives, so that others may follow in their footsteps.
We have teamed up with students from the Ben-Gurion University, the Medical School for International Health in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center, and concerned citizens to create “compost hot spots”.
These “hot spots” are more than just mini-recycling centers. They are the seeds of change. In addition to recycling a significant quantity of organic waste, locally, (more than 4 tons have been converted to compost in a year) these environmental leaders serve as an interface with the community, enabling regular citizens to experience real environmental activism up close and personal. It has been our experience that by using this grassroots model of environmental change we have been able to connect positively to a wide range of people and sustain it long term.
